The textile industry is the second largest polluter in the world closely linked to the ‘winner’ in this category – fossil fuels industry. In comparison with plastic pollution there are even less solutions, the recycling rate is lower than 1 % and let’s face it – we do not have a clue what to do with unwanted clothes besides dumping them on the other side of the world.
Encouraging reuse is the obvious next step towards less clothing waste. Three Slovenian organizations joined forces and initiated the Day in second hand clothes which is celebrated on April the 23rd. Reuse solves several challenges of modern society – hyper-production, hyper-consumption and ‘hyper-discarding’. In our experience, the easiest way to counteract them is to lead example, hence the idea and need for the Day in second hand clothes.
Therefore, on April 23, put on preloved clothes and encourage your friends to reuse. Take photos in second hand clothes, the ones your grandmother gave you, or go for a styling from recycled pieces. Take a photo with the sign Day in second hand clothes and add #DayInSecondHandClothes.
This day is also a great opportunity for educational institutions, NGOs and companies to pass on sustainable behavior to their users. We have gathered some ideas and we invite you to let us know how your organization will celebrate this day. We are happy to follow and share all acitvities that are going to take place during the Fashion revolution week (15. – 29. 4.).
